Of course you can't adjust your family budget if you didn't have one to begin with. If that is the case, prepare one now based on your current spending patterns.
Now let's see if we can make a few modifications to your budget. Not all items can be changed. Those with contracted amounts are locked in. This includes items such as your mortgage, rent and certain loan payments.
What we want to concentrate on are the expenditures we do control. Using the examples from previous wealth tips and your own ideas, reduce any items you can by as much as you can.
Be as aggressive as possible as you re-work your budget. The more Power Money you find, the faster you will be able to build wealth. Remember, even just a small amount in several different categories will add up quite nicely for our purposes. Think positive. You can do this with just a touch of will power.
A good starting point for most of us will be the "Meals Out" category. We can all afford to lose a few pounds, so we can kill two birds with one stone here. This goes for the "Groceries" category as well. Take the junk food out of your cart and watch your grocery bill shrink.
Eliminating one cell phone will reduce the "Cell and Telephone" category.
Household and Miscellaneous will be another category to focus on. This is where we account for such items as gambling, fingernails, magazine subscriptions, gift purchases, cigarettes, alcohol, etc. You should be able to do some major cutting here.
When you are finished making all the modifications that you can, recalculate your bottom line. Hopefully, you will have more money left over each month now that you have re-worked your budget. And that's Power Money. And that will be the key to your wealth accumulation.
Congratulations, the hardest part is over. The next step will explain how to best utilize the Power Money you have found.
Until next time, Al Crisp, CPA
