More and more, a college degree is the ticket to career advancement and higher pay. But many obstacles -- like commitments to jobs and families -- can make returning to college a challenge for busy adults.

Adults are, however, finding ways to meet the challenge, and changing the college demographic dramatically. Now more than half of college students are older than 30.

What's their secret to finding the time to attend college? While many take leave from their jobs and or find ways to accommodate families to allow part-time study, others are finding the flexiblity they need by going online for education. And you can too.

Online education has huge advantages for those with time constraints. You can log in whenever from where ever to get instructional help, access lectures, participate in discussions and deliver assigments.

What are the classes like? Generally, during the first week of classes, you are asked to log in and tell the class a little about yourself. This is accomplished through the use of discussion boards, which work similar to email - everyone does not have to be online at the same time. As the course progresses, you read messages from your instructor and other class members, responding when appropriate.

Sometimes the entire class will be required to log in at the same time to discuss a topic. And because Internet access is becoming widespread, students may be taking part in the class from a coffee shop, library, work place, hotel lobby or bedroom office.

There is no shortage of programs to choose from, but when scouting out possibilities be sure to look for an accredited institution. Many colleges with traditional classrooms also offer online education.

You don't want to spend the time and effort it takes to get the degree, only to find out that employers won't consider it valid. You won't have to worry if your degree is from an accredited school - employers will view it the same as any other degree. As a matter of fact, in many cases, your course work is not identified on your transcripts as being taken online.

Online degrees from non-accredited schools, or from those that seem to be accredited but promise quick and easy completion of requirements, are worthless. They'll take your money but won't get you where you want to go. Hard work, whether online or sitting in a classroom chair, is still the only route to a degree with value.

Your local college is a good place to start in researching possibilities for online education. If the college doesn't have what you want, it can likely point you in the right direction.
