The need to carry insurance in case of fire, robbery, accidental or natural disaster doesn't impress itself among some people until it is too late. Only then do they discover that renters and homeowners insurance is inexpensive and definitely worth the cost.

You'll need to buy the right types of insurance, which will depend on the area in which you live. No sense getting hurricane insurance in Iowa, but you will need tornado insurance for sure. According to Insure.com, insurance against kidnappings to pay ransom is even now being sold in personal insurance. At one time, only corporations asked for this type of insurance.

That site also says that there are policies available to cover stalking threats, home invasion, or child abduction. Prices and availability vary based on where you live and on which company you ask.

What if a friend or acquaintance walks up to your door, trips over a bump on the stairs, and falls? Insurance will cover you for injuries people receive on your property, or say if your dog or cat bites a guest. Without property insurance, you could find yourself in big trouble in the future and face astronomical expense or loss. Almost every day, news stories show the unexpected happening to people around the country, so the need for this type of insurance is not all hype.

Other unexpected coverage from some renters or homeowner's insurance policies can include: * Fire, lightning, windstorm, or hail damage * Riot or civil commotion * Volcanic eruption * Damage from weight of ice, snow, or sleet * Water damage from home utilities (a common problem) and * Electrical surge damage.

The standard policy in your area may not include coverage for the above, as every company covers different things. If you choose to, you can include these in your policy. The main coverage options are "Replacement Cost Coverage" which will pay out the current cost of replacing every item you lose, and "Actual Cash Value" which will pay out only what you paid when you bought the item.

Some items are considered "irreplaceable" like antiques, silver, jewelry, and china. You can get coverage for these as well, but you may have to pay more. To ensure that you will get the full value of your insurance if you ever make a claim, make a detailed inventory of your belongings. You can record them very efficiently with a digital camera. An inventory will also help determine exactly how much coverage you need to purchase.

Some personal property insurance policies offer add-ons to the standard policy. These features insure, among others, computer software and hardware, personal articles such as art, and builder's risk insurance for those building a new home. As with all insurance products, you'll need to tailor your policy to your budget and needs.
