Every small business starts off from the same place, with a great idea, a business plan, and no money. Unless the new business owner is independently wealthy or has found a wealthy partner or sponsor, the business may be doomed to failure unless financing can be obtained to make it through the start-up period and give adequate cash backing. This is where an unsecured small business loan comes into play.

One form of small business loan is an unsecured loan. While a secured loan hands over some material goods, such a house or other property, to the lender if the borrower defaults, an unsecured loan is simply a promise to repay. The small business owner must have a good credit rating to obtain an unsecured loan and must be willing to pay a higher rate of interest over a secured loan. The small business owner is liable for repaying the loan whether or not the business is successful.

A small business loan generally provides optional features that help to protect the small business owner in case of adverse circumstances. No one knows what tomorrow might bring and even though you are excited about the future of your new business, you may become ill and not be able to handle the day-to-day operations of your venture. While there is extra expense involved, it may be wise to invest in some of the optional loan features such as credit health. Credit health coverage will make loan payments while you are unable to work due to health reasons.

A small business loan is not a loan like you would take out to buy a car, for example. With a car loan, you receive the full amount of the loan at the beginning and of course, the loan is secured by the title to the vehicle. An unsecured business loan has no property to back it, as already discussed. Also the business owner does not necessarily get the full amount of the loan right away. Money can be withdrawn from the line of credit in order to pay day to day business expenses. A line of credit usually has an opening fee and an annual fee based upon the amount of the loan.

Applying for a small business loan isn't highly tricky as long as you've already formed your business. Supplying business information, business owner information, and primary contact information starts the application process. Examples of business information include the business tax identification number, date that the business was established, and any business account numbers. As for examples of commonly requested business owner information, most lenders want to know the business owner's social security number and annual household income. Most lenders offer this service online, by phone, by mail or at one of their branches.
