When it comes to making good investments, leave your emotions out of it.

Good investment decisions are rarely made using your gut instinct and your emotions. Only a very small number of people can use their instincts to make successful trades. And even then, their instincts don't last for the long term. After a while, your instincts will lead you to lose money. When professional investors are unable to use their instincts on a long term basis to make good investment decisions, you should not try to either. Make sure you use proven financial fundamentals and solid research to guide your decisions.

Two emotions that have a very adverse affect on your stock returns are fear and greed. Fear of losing all your money and selling too soon and greed for not getting out when you have secured a nice return are two ways many investors lose money.

Constantly watching CNBC and reacting to negative news stories about your stocks is a very irrational thing to do. You see your stock dropping and you want to sell because you fear losing all your money.

I am certainly guilty of this myself. I was watching CNBC one day about one of my stocks and the news was not good. My stock was down 25% in one day! I sold. Then I sat down and took a step back to see how bad the news really was. The stock was punished too severely. The news was nowhere as bad as I thought it was. Life went on and the "grey clouds" passed over the company.

Boy was I wrong. A few weeks later, the news was not as bad as I thought it was and the stock started to go back up. I did not rebuy my position and in less than a year, the stock went from $8 a share all the way up to $28 and still climbing.

Using fear and greed to help with your investments is a losing proposition.

Falling in love with a company you own is another big emotion that can keep you from making a good investment decision. When the company loses it way or becomes obsolete, then you need to dump it. But if you are in love with the company, this makes it very difficult and costly. You need to learn to separate yourself from the company and just let go. Never get attached to any investments you make. You need to remember that the main reason for investing in stocks is capital appreciation, i.e. to make money. This is really the only reason.

You are not investing because you love the stock or because you enjoy the rush. You are doing it only to make money. Period. Never get emotionally attached to anything you invest in. Because if you do and can't separate yourself from the stock then you'll never make any money because the only way you'll make any real money is when you actually "sell" the stock.

You can accumulate wealth by investing in stocks but you need to remember that emotions like fear, greed, and love have no place in your investment decisions.
